"What could be better for an ergonomic fanatic to develop an ancestral custom full of history and heritage, where it was born thousand years ago? It is in these conditions that we create the best products!"
When the first Europeans arrived in Tahiti in 18th Century they were amazed by the numbers, the quality, and the astonishing performances of these pirogues (named outrigger canoe: va’a, waka, wa’a, vaka).
The pirogues were usually given to warriors or tribe’s leaders during ceremonies and rituals. Metals were not present in Polynesia and therefore wood, stone and shell were the tools used to cut and sculpt the trunk. The edged boards were “sewed” to the hull by a linking system made of coconut filaments.
Exceptional sailors, the Polynesian are without a doubt the first to have travelled such long distances on boats made of natural materials and without sailing instruments! The Polynesian triangle of the "Maohi" conquerors consists of the regions between Hawaii, New Zeland, and Easter island-Rapa nui.
Still today, the va’a plays a predominate part in the life of Polynesian people. It is from far the most popular sport of the people located on the other side of the world.
With new composite materials, the ancestral pirogue has evolved in its design and its functionalities so that it offers a mix between speed, slide, balance and can even be used in wave surfing. With this type of vessel, the stand up paddle is already old school!
Escape with your va’a for a leisure trip or for training/competition and discover new sensations and a new aquatic experience, almost “un art de vivre”...
By making its products where this sport is evolving, MONBOOVAA wants to save the local “savoir faire” and the local craftsman.
